The two missiles are only the latest in a series fired by the hermit kingdom amid protestations against U.S. presence in the region and insistence that the communist nation is only acting in self-defense.

North Korean Ambassador to the U.S. Kim Song defended North Korea’s previous test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile on Wednesday, calling it a legitimate exercise in national self-defense.

“Exercise of the right to self-defense is a legitimate right of a sovereign state which nobody can deny as it is recognized under the UN Charter and international law,” Kim said.

South Korea’s U.N. Ambassador Hwang Joon-kook was present at the meeting as an observing member.

The diplomatic situation is further complicated by a U.S. soldier who recently crossed the Military Demarcation Line from South Korea into North Korea.

A U.S. Forces Korea spokesperson said King was on a joint security area orientation tour on Tuesday when he “willfully and without authorization crossed the Military Demarcation Line into the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).”

Cases of Americans or South Koreans defecting to North Korea are rare, though more than 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea to avoid political oppression and economic difficulties since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War, according to The Associated Press.

Fox News Digital’s Anders Hagstrom, Greg Norman, Jennifer Griffin and Liz Friden contributed to this report.

Australian sailor returns after months lost at sea with dog, reveals what he wants to eat back on land https://gatebizglobal.com/australian-sailor-returns-land-months-lost-sea-dog-reveals-what-wants-eat-back-land/ https://gatebizglobal.com/australian-sailor-returns-land-months-lost-sea-dog-reveals-what-wants-eat-back-land/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/australian-sailor-returns-land-months-lost-sea-dog-reveals-what-wants-eat-back-land/ An Australian sailor who said he survived on raw fish and rainwater while adrift at sea for months with his dog has revealed what his first meal will be after returning ashore Tuesday in Mexico.

Timothy Shaddock, 54, disembarked from the Mexican tuna boat María Delia that rescued him and his pup, Bella, in the Pacific Ocean and stepped foot on land in the city of Manzanillo.

When reporters asked what he would like to eat, Shaddock, smiling through his long beard and emaciated appearance, said “tuna sushi” — a sign of the castaway’s sense of humor after having survived for months on his disabled catamaran by fishing and eating his catch raw and collecting rainwater to drink.

Shaddock and Bella had set sail from northwest Mexico in late April, he said, planning to sail to French Polynesia. A few weeks into his voyage, a storm struck, disabling his catamaran and leaving him with no electronics and no way to cook.

He declined to discuss the storm or how his vessel was damaged, though images of the catamaran taken during his rescue showed there was no sail.

Shaddock said he spent most of his time adrift at sea fixing things on the boat, saying that the “fatigue is the hardest part.”

Mudslide in central Colombia kills 14, disrupts key highway; urgency for enhanced urban planning stressed https://gatebizglobal.com/mudslide-central-colombia-kills-14-disrupts-key-highway-urgency-enhanced-urban-planning-stressed/ https://gatebizglobal.com/mudslide-central-colombia-kills-14-disrupts-key-highway-urgency-enhanced-urban-planning-stressed/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/mudslide-central-colombia-kills-14-disrupts-key-highway-urgency-enhanced-urban-planning-stressed/ A mudslide in central Colombia killed at least 14 people early Tuesday and blocked a highway that connects Bogota to the nation’s eastern plains, officials said.

The avalanche of mud and debris took down several homes in Quetame, a municipality located an hour’s drive southeast of Bogota. It was unleashed by heavy rains that flooded three streams.

Police said they were searching for missing people who could be buried under the debris. The mudslide also swept over a toll booth and tore down a bridge on the Bogota-Villavicencio highway, forcing police to redirect traffic.

Many of the homes affected by the mudslide were built along hillsides, close to rivers.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro gave his condolences to the victims on Twitter, and wrote that the incident “demonstrates that there is an imperative need” for local officials to plan urban areas more rigorously, leaving greater space around waterways.

Heat wave expected to intensify this week leading to increased risk of heart attacks, deaths, according to WMO https://gatebizglobal.com/heatwave-expected-intensify-week-leading-increased-risk-heart-attacks-deaths-according-wmo/ https://gatebizglobal.com/heatwave-expected-intensify-week-leading-increased-risk-heart-attacks-deaths-according-wmo/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/heatwave-expected-intensify-week-leading-increased-risk-heart-attacks-deaths-according-wmo/ The heat wave engulfing the northern hemisphere is set to intensify this week, causing overnight temperatures to surge and leading to an increased risk of heart attacks and deaths, the World Meteorological Organization said on Tuesday.

“Temperatures in North America, Asia, and across North Africa and the Mediterranean will be above 40°C for a prolonged number of days this week as the heatwave intensifies,” the WMO said in a statement.

Overnight minimum temperatures were also set to reach new highs, according to the WMO, creating risks of increased cases of heart attacks and deaths.

BEHAVIORS THAT COULD CAUSE A HEART ATTACK

“The Mediterranean heatwave is big but nothing like what’s been through North Africa,” said John Nairn, Senior Extreme Heat Advisor for WMO. “It’s developing into Europe at this stage.”

US Navy’s 19K-ton cargo ship runs aground in Bahrain https://gatebizglobal.com/us-navys-19000-ton-cargo-ship-runs-aground-bahrain/ https://gatebizglobal.com/us-navys-19000-ton-cargo-ship-runs-aground-bahrain/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/us-navys-19000-ton-cargo-ship-runs-aground-bahrain/ The U.S. Navy has launched an investigation into how its 19,000-ton cargo ship USNS Alan Shepard ran aground in the Middle Eastern country of Bahrain over the weekend.

In a statement to Fox News, U.S. 5th Fleet spokesperson Cmdr. Tim Hawkins said USNS Alan Shepard “ran aground while moving under its own propulsion from ASRY shipyard in Al Hidd to a pier at Khalifa Bin Salman Port.

“Assisted by tugboats, Alan Shepard maneuvered under its own power this morning at high tide and is safely moored pierside in Bahrain,” he added. “No personnel were injured. An investigation into the circumstances of the grounding is ongoing.”

An estimated 85 crew members were on board the ship at the time it ran aground.

A Navy investigation later concluded that the former commanding officer of the guided missile destroyer was “ultimately responsible” for the mishap, the website added.

That incident left a repair bill of at least $4.2 million, and the Navy investigation said Capt. Joseph Carrigan’s “judgment and decision making, including his actions that distracted or rushed the bridge team” was primarily to blame, according to Stars and Stripes.

Hong Kong seafood businesses prepares for Japanese import ban due to nuclear wastewater pollution https://gatebizglobal.com/hong-kong-seafood-business-prepares-japanese-import-ban-nuclear-wastewater-pollution/ https://gatebizglobal.com/hong-kong-seafood-business-prepares-japanese-import-ban-nuclear-wastewater-pollution/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/hong-kong-seafood-business-prepares-japanese-import-ban-nuclear-wastewater-pollution/ As Tokyo plans to discharge treated radioactive wastewater into the sea, Japanese restaurant operator Sam Lam is busy finding substitutes for Japanese seafood that could soon be banned from entering Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong government said last Wednesday that the city would immediately bar the import of aquatic products from 10 Japanese prefectures if wastewater from the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant is released into the Pacific Ocean.

Lam said his team could get seafood from other sources and change menus to adjust to the ban, but he predicted that revenues could nevertheless drop from 10% to 20% if the Japanese and Hong Kong governments press ahead with their plans.

“My customers told me that once the water is discharged, they will eat fewer (aquatic products) or stop eating them,” he said in an interview Friday.

JAPAN OFFERING FAMILIES 1 MILLION YEN PER CHILD TO LEAVE TOKYO FOR RURAL AREAS

Wong said the city’s Japanese restaurants could find substitute seafood products from other regions, but they may not share the same level of prestige, and that could mar a restaurant’s image or make customers feel that the food is less authentic.

“After moving past the pandemic, businesses were hoping that crisis is a thing of the past already. They don’t know if this incident will bring another crisis,” he said.

CHINESE CARRIER STRIKE GROUP, DRONES OPERATING NEAR JAPAN, WHICH DISPATCHED AIRCRAFT TO MONITOR SITUATION

Christine Huang, who imports Japanese food from outside the 10 prefectures targeted in the potential ban, remembered the pain in 2011.

Consumer worries triggered by the Fukushima accident led to her company’s revenues being halved for a period of two to three months, said Huang, the director at Best Quality Food. Workers at her company were forced to take unpaid leave, she added.

Oyster shop owner Wilson Lau, who sells shellfish from Miyagi, said he was not bothered. “Fresh oysters also exist in many countries,” said Lau, who is director of the HK Oyster Concern Group. “Even if consumers do not eat Japanese oysters, they can eat other types of oysters.”

At about Friday’s noon at Sam Lam’s Japanese restaurant, fewer customers were ordering sashimi than usual. Of about 10 meal sets Lam checked, only one was sashimi, he said.

UN Security Council calls for action plan to combat Haiti's armed gangs, restore security https://gatebizglobal.com/un-security-council-calls-action-plan-combat-haitis-armed-gangs-restore-security/ https://gatebizglobal.com/un-security-council-calls-action-plan-combat-haitis-armed-gangs-restore-security/#respond Fri, 14 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/un-security-council-calls-action-plan-combat-haitis-armed-gangs-restore-security/ The U.N. Security Council ordered the secretary-general on Friday to consider options to help combat Haiti’s armed gangs, including a possible U.N. peacekeeping force and a non-U.N. multinational force.

A resolution adopted unanimously by the council asks U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to report back on options within 30 days.

It also authorizes up to 70 U.N. police and corrections advisers to scale up support and training for Haiti’s understaffed and underfunded national police force. And it “encourages” countries especially in the Caribbean region to respond to appeals from Haiti’s prime minister and from Guterres for the deployment of an international specialized force.

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry sent an urgent appeal last October for “the immediate deployment of a specialized armed force, in sufficient quantity” to stop the gangs, but more than eight months later no country has stepped up to lead such a force.

Guterres, who visited Haiti earlier this month, called last week for a robust international force to help the Haitian National Police “defeat and dismantle the gangs.” He said the estimate by the U.N. independent expert for Haiti, William O’Neill, that up to 2,000 additional anti-gang police officers are needed is no exaggeration. O’Neill, who concluded a 10-day trip to Haiti this month, is an American lawyer who has been working on Haiti for over 30 years and helped establish the Haitian National Police in 1995.

One fifth of United Methodists schism over LGBT marriage, ordination https://gatebizglobal.com/one-fifth-united-methodists-schism-lgbt-marriage-ordination/ https://gatebizglobal.com/one-fifth-united-methodists-schism-lgbt-marriage-ordination/#respond Fri, 07 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/one-fifth-united-methodists-schism-lgbt-marriage-ordination/ One-fifth of United Methodist Church (UMC) congregations in the United States have received approval to schism from the wider denomination

More than 6,000 congregations have separated from the governing conference, dropping substantial amounts of money to buy out of the UMC.

“I don’t think any of us want to see any of our churches leave,” said president of the UMC’s Council of Bishops, Thomas Bickerton.

In 2019, the General Conference voted 438-384 to uphold the church’s ban on ordaining LGBTQ clergy and officiating at or hosting same-sex weddings.

However, the conference has repeatedly delayed action formally splitting the denomination along theological lines, frustrating conservatives demanding reaffirmation of orthodox teachings on sexuality.

Many of the departing churches are joining the newly formed Global Methodist Church or remaining non-denominational.

Hundreds of the churches attempting to disaffiliate have faced legal or financial hurdles as the UMC has demanded large sums to maintain their property, which has led to legal battles in some states, according to the Christian Post.

Trudeau blasted for 'fan girling' in Twitter reply to Taylor Swift: 'Put out the fires Justin' https://gatebizglobal.com/trudeau-blasted-for-fan-girling-in-twitter-reply-to-taylor-swift-put-out-the-fires-justin/ https://gatebizglobal.com/trudeau-blasted-for-fan-girling-in-twitter-reply-to-taylor-swift-put-out-the-fires-justin/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/trudeau-blasted-for-fan-girling-in-twitter-reply-to-taylor-swift-put-out-the-fires-justin/ Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was widely mocked on Twitter over a post where he asked Taylor Swift, using lyrics from her songs, to perform in Canada.

“It’s me, hi,” Trudeau tweeted at Swift in response to her announcement of 14 new international show dates to her current tour that didn’t include Canada. “I know places in Canada would love to have you. So, don’t make it another cruel summer. We hope to see you soon.”

While some praised Trudeau for outing himself as a “Swifty”, the tweet generated criticism from many social media users who mocked the Canadian leader, characterized his post as a sign of Canada’s struggling economy and questioned his priorities as wildfires continue to ravage large portions of Canada.

“Direct update on the state of Canada’s economy,” filmmaker Lauren Southern tweeted.

Swift’s tour, which kicked off in March in Arizona, includes more than 100 concerts through the summer of 2024 in the United States, Mexico, Europe, Asia and Australia, but none in Canada.

It is not the first time that Swift’s lack of Canadian stops has entered the political arena. Last month, Conservative lawmaker Matt Jeneroux filed what he called an “official grievance” on social media imploring her to book some dates in Canada.

The police officer accused of the shooting death of teen Nahel Merzouk is in custody on a charge of voluntary homicide, and a judge in Versailles on Thursday rejected his request for release pending further investigation.

“We all lived through an important moment in the life of our nation,” Macron said in the southern city of Pau on the edge of the Pyrenees. He said that France now needs “order, calm, unity. And then to work on the deep causes of what happened.”

He didn’t address what those causes are. The French leader has blamed parents of young rioters and social networks including TikTok and Snapchat for fueling violence that spread to around 500 cities and towns.

Some activists, along with residents of the low-income neighborhoods where the violence began, say the killing was the latest evidence of systematic police brutality and unaddressed racial discrimination in France. Merzouk was of north African origin.
