I’ve got a solution.  We recently received an email from Linda who lives in Hemet, California. She wrote in about her concerns over phone theft and the potential ease with which someone could charge products using a lost or stolen phone’s apps. Here’s what she asked us:

If a phone is lost or stolen, can’t they just pull up the app and charge products easily?

— Linda in Hemet, California

Thanks for the question, Linda. The short answer is no, not if you have set a passcode on your device and they can’t guess it.  Then you did the second most important protection by enabling two-factor authentication or 2FA. If you’ve done these two things, there’s a good shot that they won’t be able to get into your phone at all to get to those apps to charge products. You can also erase everything on your phone remotely and remove it from your Apple or Google accounts.

Listen, we know losing a phone can be incredibly stressful for many different reasons. Dealing with all the logistics can be a nightmare, on top of the privacy and security concerns of your information being exposed. Not to mention Linda’s concern over the risk of fraudulent charges through apps. We hope to ease some of your worries with some tips to prevent unauthorized  charges on your lost or stolen phone.

HOW TO FIND A LOST WINDOWS LAPTOP

Remove the device from any accounts you can

After you remotely erase the data, you can remove the phone from your accounts. But first, try to find it through icloud.com. I would recommend you keep on looking before you contemplate erasing it, hoping there’s a good Samaritan who will respond to your Marking the device as lost as described above.

After a few hours, if you see the device moving and no one is responding to you, then that’s not a good sign, and it’s time to sever ties your device has with your data. For your Apple account, follow these steps:

How to remove iPhone from accounts

  • Go to icloud.com and log in with your Apple ID
  • Click the grid of 12 small dots in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
  • Click on Find My iPhone
  • Click on All Devices and select the device you want to remove
  • Click on Erase (Device) and enter your Apple ID password
  • When the device is erased, click Remove from Account

How to sign out of Android accounts

  • Open the Google Account settings page in your web browser. You can do this by going to https://myaccount.google.com or by clicking on your profile picture or initial in the top right corner of any Google page and selecting “Manage your Google Account.”
  •
  • Desktop: on the left navigation panel, click on Security
  • Mobile device: on the top navigation, scroll to Security and click it.
  • Scroll down to the “Your devices” section and click on “Manage all devices.”
  • You’ll see a list of devices that are currently connected to your Google account. Find the device that you want to unlink and click on it.
  • On the device details page, click on the “Sign out” button next to the device name. It will ask you to confirm your selection. Do so by tapping “Sign out” again.  This will sign out the device from your Google account.

A report from the Israeli security firm Check Point Harmony Email reveals this new technique that hackers are using. Here are all the details we know and how to avoid becoming the next victim of these vicious attacks.

How are hackers pursuing this new phishing technique?

Typically, when a hacker sends out a phishing email, it will consist of a link that the victim is urged to click on, which will lead them to a phishing website (often disguised as a legit site like Amazon), where they are urged to hand over their personal information. However, this technique has hackers using images instead of links.

By using only images, hackers can avoid these mistakes and instead urge victims to click on the image that will take them to the phishing website. ( )

Phishing messages can be spotted more easily if you read carefully, because there are typically spelling and grammar errors in them. By using only images, hackers can avoid these mistakes and instead urge victims to click on the image that will take them to the phishing website. These are stereotypically large promotional images that one might see in an advertising email from a company like Best Buy, Kohl’s or other large retailers, so victims may not second guess it right away. However, once the image is clicked on, victims are taken to phishing sites that are designed to steal passwords and other sensitive information.

Check the sender’s address

If you’re receiving an email that’s claiming to be from a major company like Walmart or Delta, look closely at the sender’s email. You can easily use your trusted search engine to look up the real email address for these companies and if the email you got doesn’t match that address, then you’ll know it’s a scam.

Don’t click links or open attachments

If you get an email from an unknown sender, and it has links, attachments, or in this case, images that you’re being urged to click on, this is a big red flag. This is one of the main ways that scammers will lead their victims to phishing websites, so make sure you’re not just blindly trusting the sender and clicking on whatever they’re offering you.

Kurt’s key takeaways

Cybercriminals are now using images instead of links in their phishing emails to deceive us and lead us to malicious websites. To avoid becoming a victim of these scams, it’s crucial to carefully check the sender’s email address, refrain from clicking on suspicious links or attachments, and stay calm to avoid falling into the hackers’ traps. By staying vigilant and following these steps, you can protect yourself from these vicious attacks and safeguard your personal information.

Don’t fall for this sneaky nameless number text scam https://gatebizglobal.com/dont-fall-sneaky-nameless-number-text-scam/ https://gatebizglobal.com/dont-fall-sneaky-nameless-number-text-scam/#respond Sun, 25 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/dont-fall-sneaky-nameless-number-text-scam/ A new phone number text messaging scam has been making the rounds on smartphones. This sneaky scam is pretty clever. Scammers are getting better by the day at fooling people into thinking they’re genuine, so we have to be more prepared than ever when it comes to protecting our information. Let’s go through how this scam tricks people and what you can do to protect yourself.

What does this text messaging scam do?

Scammer texts from a random number

This new sneaky scam has a scammer text you from a random number claiming that they have your phone number yet don’t have a name attached.

Gain your sympathy

They will then try to gain your sympathy by saying they’re a long-lost friend or family member and they want to reconnect. The message will look something like this:

How do I know if it’s a scam and not a real person trying to contact me?

Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when dealing with unfamiliar or suspicious contacts. Protecting your personal information and staying vigilant can help minimize the risk of falling victim to scams.

If you receive a text from someone claiming to have your phone number but not your name attached to it, it’s important to exercise caution, even if you think it might be a real person. While it may not necessarily be a scam, it’s always better to be safe and protect yourself.  Here are some of my tips for protecting yourself.

5 REASONS WHY YOU WANT TO USE AIRPLANE MODE MORE OFTEN

MORE: DON’T FALL FOR THESE WRONG NUMBER TEXTING SCAMS

Beware of suspicious links or attachments

Avoid clicking on any links or downloading attachments from unknown senders. These could be phishing attempts to gain unauthorized access to your personal information or install malware on your device.

Having good antivirus software on your devices will make sure you are stopped from clicking on any potential malicious links or opening any malicious attachments that a scammer might send you, which may install malware on your devices and allow them to gain access to your personal information.

Block and report the sender

If you suspect the text sender is engaging in fraudulent activity or if they continue to bother you despite your best efforts to determine their identity, consider blocking their number. Additionally, report the incident to your local authorities or the appropriate organization if it involves a known company or service.

Use identity theft protection

If you accidentally gave the scammer your name, be wary of what they may do with your information. Identity Theft protection companies can monitor personal information like your home title, Social Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

What is Google Wallet?

Google Wallet was formerly known as Google Pay, and Google Pay was originally known as Android Pay. It’s pretty much the same idea as Apple Pay for iPhone users, where you can keep your payment cards on your phone and tap it at checkout to pay for contactless transactions anywhere Google Pay is accepted. Many places support Apple Pay and Google Pay, but not every place you visit may be accepting this as a form of payment just yet. Let’s go over what you’re getting with this new update.

Digital car key

You can also now experience the freedom of a lighter keyring by securely storing your digital car keys in Google Wallet. All you have to do is hold your phone to your car door handle, and voila! It opens. Enjoy the convenience and security of digital car keys on the go.

At the time of publishing, this feature is initially being introduced for select BMW models only. However, digital car keys will soon be available for additional car models in the near future.

Kurt’s key takeaways

This is a significant upgrade to Android phones, and many of you will be grateful for and use Google Wallet. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find ourselves in a cardless world within the next five to 10 years. One thing is for sure we are witnessing a remarkable shift in how we handle transactions and manage our finances. The main things I have concerns over are security and privacy, and as long as these big tech companies like Google address this to stay ahead of the crooks, we should be in good shape.

Artificial intelligence won't likely reach human-like levels without this one key component, study finds https://gatebizglobal.com/artificial-intelligence-wont-likely-reach-human-like-levels-without-key-component-study-finds/ https://gatebizglobal.com/artificial-intelligence-wont-likely-reach-human-like-levels-without-key-component-study-finds/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/artificial-intelligence-wont-likely-reach-human-like-levels-without-key-component-study-finds/ Artificial intelligence will likely not reach human-like cognition unless the programs are connected to robots and designed with evolutionary principles, researchers in the U.K. found.

Revolutionary AI platforms that mimic human conversation, such as the wildly popular ChatGPT, will never reach human-like cognition despite their large their neural networks and the massive datasets they are trained on if they remain disembodied and only appear on computer screens, researchers at the University of Sheffield reported in a new study.

ChatGPT, a chatbot that can simulate conversations with human users who provide prompts to the AI platform, learns in a similar way to human children through supervised and unsupervised learning. Unsupervised learning entails the system learning through trial and error, such as a human telling the chatbot an answer to a prompt was wrong and building off of that information. Supervised learning is more similar to children attending school and learning required material – AI-powered chatbots are trained on inputs that have pre-established outputs that the program learns from.

University of Sheffield professors of computer science Tony Prescott and Stuart Wilson found that despite AI having the ability to emulate how humans learn, the programs are unlikely to fully think like humans unless given the opportunity to artificially feel and sense the real world.

The study, which was published in the research journal Science Robotics, argued that human intelligence is developed due to the complicated subsystems of the brain that all vertebrates share. This architecture of the brain, coupled with a human’s experience in the real world to learn and improve through evolution, is something that is rarely incorporated when building AI systems, the researchers argued.

“It is much more likely that AI systems will develop human-like cognition if they are built with architectures that learn and improve in similar ways to how the human brain does, using its connections to the real world. Robotics can provide AI systems with these connections – for example, via sensors such as cameras and microphones and actuators such as wheels and grippers. AI systems would then be able to sense the world around them and learn like the human brain,” Prescott continued.

MetaAI is an example of a tool good for making short animations based off of just a few words of text. On the MetaAI website, there are some examples of animations that were created based on text. For one of the examples, the text typed in was “a dog wearing a superhero cape flying through the sky.” The tool was then able to produce an animation showing just that.

There are other tools like Synthesia that make longer, more realistic looking videos. With a tool like Synthesia, a user can choose a video template and an avatar to narrate the video. Then, a written script is typed into the software to create the video. With this software, an individual can then go in and make any desired edits they see fit, like adding backgrounds, colors, and text on the video.

The basic premise of turning text into video is simply typing text into the software and the tool will give you a video display of that text.

For longer, more advanced videos, the user’s editing is likely to be needed, even if it is simply to add some additional elements to the video, like a background for an avatar. For extremely simple, short graphics, there won’t need to be much work done on the user’s part other than creating clear text for the video to be produced by the AI.

Ask Kurt: How to fight back against unauthorized Facebook charges https://gatebizglobal.com/ask-kurt-fight-back-against-unauthorized-facebook-charges/ https://gatebizglobal.com/ask-kurt-fight-back-against-unauthorized-facebook-charges/#respond Tue, 13 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/ask-kurt-fight-back-against-unauthorized-facebook-charges/ We recently received a concerning message from Martha of East Millinocket, Maine. She contacted us to share her distressing experience related to her small business’ Facebook page. Here’s what she had to say:

“I have a small business (it’s been inactive due to my husband’s illness for 3 years), but we have a website that we hoped we can be able to use eventually. We have a Facebook page that we have never really used for business. Suddenly last week, I noticed we had deductions from Facebook for $400+ numerous times. We can’t afford this. I went on to FB and found my advertising limit had been adjusted to $400. I did not do this, but they are draining our checking account dry. Do I report to the FCC or what? I really could use some advice on how to proceed. Thank you.”

–  MARTHA, East Millinocket, ME

Facebook makes it easy for you to pay for things online through their two services, Meta Pay and Ads payments. Ads payments allow you to pay for ads you want to put on Facebook, while Meta Pay is simply a way for you to make payments on Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and in participating online stores. However, having these conveniences also comes with the risk of having someone hack into your account, obtain your information, and drain your bank account, like what happened to Martha.

How would someone gain access to my Facebook account?

There are multiple ways that a person can gain access to your Facebook account. Some people might have weak passwords, while others may have their information, like their email address and phone number, on their public profile.

Contact your bank or credit card company

I would also advise you to contact your bank or credit card company about the unauthorized purchase. If you have a debit or credit card attached to your Facebook account, your bank or credit card company should be able to help you take the necessary steps to get your money back.

AI jobs with mind-blowing paychecks of $375K a year https://gatebizglobal.com/ai-jobs-with-mind-blowing-paychecks-375k-year/ https://gatebizglobal.com/ai-jobs-with-mind-blowing-paychecks-375k-year/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://gatebizglobal.com/ai-jobs-with-mind-blowing-paychecks-375k-year/ There’s no question that artificial intelligence is changing our lives. A bot that sounds almost human can author your emails, teach you a new language, book your trips or even be your friend. Check out direct links to try those out here.

One woman I spoke with on my national radio show even married her AI companion. No kidding, she says he’s the perfect partner. Watch our chat here.

When we’re talking AI and jobs, it’s easy to be nervous that the tech will make yours obsolete. Scan this list to see if AI might change the way you work for the better.

Research Scientist, Machine Learning: Up to $370,000

OpenAI is the company behind ChatGPT, and yep, they’re hiring. This position on the Policy Research team is for an experienced machine learning researcher. The pay range is $200,000 to $370,000 with “generous equity and benefits” like 29 weeks of paid parental leave, insurance for your whole family and unlimited time off.

Sr Creative Evangelist: Up to $200,200

Adobe — the powerhouse behind Photoshop, Acrobat and all the rest — is hiring a Senior Creative Evangelist specializing in Artificial Intelligence. This role is all about building and supporting the use and understanding of AI within the company (hence Evangelist).

Up to 50% of the job requires travel since this person will lead demos, community engagement and events. Are you qualified? A bachelor’s degree is preferred, with 7-plus years of experience in Community Relations and 2-plus years in the creative industry or using creative tools. Since it’s Adobe, you’ll also need a strong design background and portfolio.

Pay varies depending on where you work, from $100,100 to $200,200 annually.

Artificial Intelligence Researcher: Up to $240,000

Here’s another job for the researchers. ShortList Recruitment is looking for an AU researcher. Their client is one of the “leading Artificial Intelligence Research companies in the U.S.” and needs a highly-skilled researcher on the team.

The remote role has a $200,000 to $240,000 base salary and requires 3-plus years of experience in AI research, specializing in Deep Learning.

Data Annotation Specialist: Up to $105,000

Of course, Microsoft makes the list. They’re hiring a Data Annotation Specialist. There’s no college degree required, but you must speak and write in Quebec French.

The San Francisco-based role is a good fit if you have “a creative hacker spirit and love solving puzzles” and “a passion for making powerful technology safe and societally beneficial.”

The expected salary range is $280,000 to $375,000, along with equity. Benefits include insurance for you and the family, 401k with 4% matching, unlimited PTO, and relocation support to move to the Bay Area.

Plus, the FCC puts an end to scam texts. UFO sightings are rising because of Elon Musk’s satellites, a GPS tracker that sees if your skis are stolen and three free police scanner apps. And a money tip that saved me over $456 in 5 minutes. Check out my podcast “Kim Komando Today” onApple, Google Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast player.

Well, don’t put away your popcorn just yet, because Tesla’s new Optimus robot could bring us one step closer to this sci-fi fantasy.

MORE: ROBOTS ARE REPLACING SECURITY GUARDS. SHOULD WE GIVE THEM GUNS?

Remember “Surrogates,” that 2009 movie where everyone lounged at home, living their lives through better-looking, risk-taking robot versions of themselves? Now, I’m not suggesting we’re quite there yet. However, the arrival of Tesla’s Optimus does make you ponder if we’re indeed tiptoeing toward such a reality. It’s not quite a surrogate yet, although, with its ability to take on household chores and errands, Optimus is undoubtedly pointing us in that direction.

No, Optimus aims at the everyday person, promising to ease our daily lives.

Yet, as fascinating as this development is, it’s essential to note that we’re not quite in “Surrogates” territory … yet. Optimus isn’t going to replace us at social gatherings or carry out intricate human interactions. However, with the rapid pace of advancements in AI and robotics, the day may not be as far off as we might think.

For now, let’s marvel at the possibilities that Optimus brings to our doorstep. Who knows? Soon, the idea of a robot doing your laundry while you enjoy a quiet evening at home might not be the stuff of science fiction but an everyday reality.
